Are you looking for a fairy-tale vacation in Europe?

Lake Como in Italy has it all and I will show you around! Nestled in the heart of the Italian Alps and looking like straight out of a postcard—imagine glittering water, cute villages, and mountains that look like they’re giving the lake a big hug. If you’re planning a trip here and want to know what’s worth checking out (and snapping pics of), here’s a fun guide to make the most of your Lake Como adventure! Let’s dive into what you can do in five awesome towns: Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, Nesso, and Como.

How To Spent a Few Days at Como? Watch It!

Varenna: A Peaceful Lakeside Retreat

Varenna is a must-see for anyone visiting Lake Como. Known for its tranquil ambiance, colorful houses and scenic pathways, Varenna is the perfect starting point for a relaxing day by the lake. (It is also my favourite place from the Lake!)

  • Wander Through the Old Town: The winding cobblestone streets of Varenna offer a romantic setting for a leisurely stroll. As you explore, you’ll find charming boutiques, local cafes, and fantastic gelaterias.
  • Visit Villa Monastero: This stunning villa-turned-museum is set amidst lush botanical gardens, with exotic plants and flowers flourishing against the backdrop of the lake.
  • Climb to Castello di Vezio: Perched above Varenna, Castello di Vezio offers panoramic views of Lake Como. The medieval fortress is also home to art exhibitions, falconry displays, and the iconic ghost statues.
  • Get Coffee at Bar II Molo: This spot will definitely be crowded; we were lucky because we stopped by first thing in the morning and got a spot right on the water with this amazing view!
  • Relax at Bar Giardino: A little on the expensive side but definitely recommend stopping and getting drinks or lunch at Bar Giardino, which you will find at the luxurious Hotel Royal Victoria.

Bellagio: The Pearl of Lake Como

Bellagio is perhaps the most famous town on Lake Como, known for its glamorous vibe, waterfront promenades, and spectacular villas.

  • Walk Along the Salita Serbelloni: This narrow, picturesque staircase leads you through the heart of Bellagio, lined with boutiques, artisanal shops, and inviting cafes.
  • Explore Villa Melzi: One of Bellagio’s gems, Villa Melzi d’Eril features beautiful gardens adorned with sculptures, ancient trees, and lakeside views. This is an ideal spot for a quiet afternoon stroll.
  • Take a Boat Tour: From Bellagio, you can hop on a boat to see Lake Como from the water. Many tours take you close to famous villas, including the Villa del Balbianello, which has appeared in Hollywood movies.
  • Romantic Dinner at Hotel Flora: You won’t find better places like this! Delicious dinner, amazing sunset in a little cute garden of Hotel Flora just on the coast. I recommend doing a reservation!

Nesso: Hidden Gem with a Natural Waterfall

Nesso is a small, off-beaten-path village with a magical, fairytale-like appeal. If you’re looking for something unique, Nesso should be on your list. Watch my travel guide right here and get ready for your trip!

  • Visit the Orrido di Nesso: Nesso’s main attraction is the Orrido di Nesso, a natural gorge and waterfall that flows into Lake Como. You can view it from the ancient Civera Bridge or get closer by taking a quick swim in the lake below.
  • Wander Through Quaint Streets: Nesso is quiet and relatively untouched, so enjoy a peaceful walk through its narrow streets and experience a slower side of Lake Como.

Menaggio: Nature and Relaxation

Menaggio, located on the western shore of Lake Como, Italy, combines scenic beauty with a laid-back atmosphere, making it perfect for unwinding or enjoying some outdoor adventures.

  • Relax by the Lake: Menaggio has a lovely lakeside promenade, perfect for walking or enjoying a gelato by the water. You’ll find benches along the shore, where you can sit back and take in the serene views.
  • Explore the Historic Center: The narrow lanes and colorful buildings of Menaggio’s old town are filled with charm. Visit the local shops, admire the Italian architecture, and stop by the main square, Piazza Garibaldi.
  • Hike or Bike the Surrounding Hills: For those seeking adventure, the trails around Menaggio offer excellent opportunities for hiking and mountain biking with fantastic lake views.

Como: The Vibrant Gateway to the Lake

The town of Como offers a dynamic mix of culture, shopping, and historical attractions. It’s also the easiest starting point for exploring Lake Como if you’re arriving by train or car.

  • Explore Como Cathedral: Known as the Duomo di Como, this grand Gothic cathedral is a masterpiece of Italian architecture and art. The interior is adorned with frescoes, statues, and intricate details.
  • Ride the Funicolare to Brunate: Take the scenic funicular from Como up to Brunate for some of the best views of Lake Como. Brunate is also known for its charming hilltop villas and cozy cafes.
  • Shop and Dine: Como’s town center is packed with high-end boutiques, artisan shops, and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to sample local dishes like risotto con pesce persico (risotto with perch fish).

Tips for Visiting Lake Como

  • Getting Around: Ferries are the most scenic and convenient way to travel between towns. Lake Como’s ferry network is extensive and allows you to explore multiple towns in a day.
  • Best Time to Visit: Lake Como is beautiful year-round, but spring (April-May) and early fall (September-October) offer mild weather and fewer crowds.
  • Pack Accordingly: Comfortable walking shoes are a must, as most of these towns have cobblestone streets and hills. Also, consider bringing a light jacket or sweater for the cooler evenings by the lake.

From the glamorous streets of Bellagio to the tranquil shores of Varenna, Lake Como is a destination that enchants travelers with every turn. Whether you’re exploring historic sites, savoring Italian cuisine, or simply soaking in the natural beauty, each town around the lake offers its own unique charm.
