This New York City trip was one of the most unforgettable adventures of our East Coast journey. From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, New York offers a mix of energy, culture, and magic that’s hard to describe — you simply have to feel it.

A Very Personal Return to New York City

I lived in NYC as an Au Pair

The City is very close to my heart because years ago, I lived here as an au pair. It was one of the most transformative chapters of my life — the place where I grew, discovered independence, and built lifelong connections.

Coming back after five years was emotional. I stayed with the same wonderful family I used to work for, and it honestly felt like coming home. Seeing how much the kids had grown and reconnecting with them reminded me how much this city and experience shaped who I am today.

Walking those same streets again — but this time as a traveler — made me realize how powerful it is to revisit the places that once helped you grow..

Top Things to See and Do in New York City

Whether it’s your first time in the Big Apple or your tenth, these are the must-visit places you can’t miss:

  • Times Square – It’s loud, bright, and chaotic, but you can’t come to New York without standing in the heart of it all.
  • Central Park – A peaceful escape from the city’s rush.
  • Top of the Rock or Empire State Building – Both offer breathtaking skyline views. I recommend going around sunset to watch the city glow in gold and then transition into its nighttime sparkle.
  • Brooklyn Bridge & DUMBO – One of the most iconic walks in the world!
  • SoHo & Greenwich Village – My favorite neighborhoods for fashion, vintage stores, and brunch spots. They show the creative, laid-back side of the city that most tourists don’t always see.
  • Hudson Yards – A living, breathing neighborhood that champions first-to-New York experiences.
  • Grand Central Train Station – historic transportation hub in Midtown Manhattan and a famous tourist destination known for its iconic architecture, shops, restaurants and landmark features like the opal-faced clock.
  • 9/11 Memorial – a tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993, terrorist attacks, located at the World Trade Centre
  • Yankee Baseball Game – a vibrant experience with diverse food options and a lively atmosphere.

Final Thoughts on Our NEW York City Adventure

Returning to New York felt like reconnecting with an old friend — one who changed but still feels familiar. The city has an energy that inspires you to dream bigger and live more boldly.

When I was here as an au pair, I was discovering life and myself. Coming back years later, I could see how much both I and the city had evolved. Watching the skyline from a rooftop at sunset reminded me of how far I’ve come — and how every experience adds to your story.

New York will always be a place that feels like home away from home.
